Noteflight is proud to announce the grand prize winner of our video game composition contest!
Aaron Ishibashi (username aishi): After the War
Congratulations Aaron!!!
We’d also like to highlight the works of our two runners up:
- Mitchell Ryan (username mitchellekwan): Hero’s Village
- Soren Nyhus (username snyhus): Bittersweet Victory (Video Game Music Contest 3)
We received over 200 quality submissions from the Noteflight community, which made the process very difficult (in a good way!) for our judges. We want to send our community and all of the wonderful composers who participated a heartfelt thank you for making this contest so vibrant. And a HUGE thank you to our judges, who worked hard to give their care and attention to every single submission.
We want to share some of the judges’ comments about how they made these difficult choices. For Shota, Aaron‘s piece stood out for its musicality and excellent compositional technique. Shimomura loved the drama of the musical story, and said that “the occasional appearance of tonality within atonality is absolutely beautiful.” Mitchell‘s piece reminded Shota of the old school RPG game. While many submissions went for more contemporary styles, he felt that this one had a “classic” sound that he really liked. Shimomura was drawn to the active movement in the strings, which sparked his imagination thinking of the scenery that could go with the music. In Soren‘s piece, Shota felt that the musical idea is really clear, and it develops skillfully from start to finish. The cadenza as a transition works really well leading into the grand finale. For Shimomura, the clear intentions of the composer came through well in this piece, and he said the music went “straight to my heart.”
Stay tuned for more information about the live performance of these three amazing scores.
AND… We’ll be announcing our next contest in April!
